The Importance of Tafkheem and Tarqeeq in Tajweed

The Importance of Tafkheem and Tarqeeq in Tajweed

What is Tarqeeq and Takhfeem:

Tarqeeq and Takhfeem are two important rules of Tajweed. Tajweed is a complete set of rules for the accurate pronunciation of the Quran. Arabic is one of the most eloquent languages of the world. When Islam spread beyond the boundaries of Arab pinensula, it became difficult for non-Arabs to pronounce Arabic language accurately. That was the time when the Muslims invented the science of Tajweed. Let’s discuss Tarqeeq and Tafkheem in detail.

Division of Arabic alphabets on the basis of their lightness and Heaviness:

We can divide the Arabic alphabets into three categories; letters that are always heavy, letters that are always light and letters that are sometimes heavy and sometimes light.

Takhfeem, Definition:

Takhfeem is the heaviness of sound. Thickening of sounds of Arabic consonents when they are pronounced is called Takhfeem.

Applied Definition of Tajweed:

It is a heaviness that enters the body of the letter, so that the mouth is filled with its reverberation (echo).”

We can make the sounds of Takhfeem by elevating the posterior tongue towards the soft part of palate. It creates more space between the roof of the mouth and the bottom of the mouth. It results in the focusing of the pressure of the letter to the roof of the mouth.

The Arabic letters are divided into three groups: tafkheem and tarqeeq:

  1. Letters that always have tafkheem. These are the seven letters in the group. They are also called the tafkheem letters.
  2. Letters that have tafkheem sometimes and tarqeeq other times.
  3. Letters that always have tarqeeq. This group consists of the rest of the Arabic alphabet.

Five types of when the ra’ (ر) produces a heavy sound (Tafkheem of ra’ (ر):

1. “When the ra’ (ر)carries a fatha or dammah, examples are as follows:

  • رَسُولُ اللهِ: the ra’ (ر) carries a fatha.
  • “فَعَقَرُوهَا: the ra’ (ر) carries a dammah.2. When the ra’ (ر)carries a sukun and the letter before it carries a fatha or dammah, examples are as follows:
  • “وَالأرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا”
  • “حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ”3. When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun, the letter before it carries a kasrah, and the letter after the ra’ (ر)is heavy and doesn’t carry a kasrah h, example is as follows:
  • ” إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا”
  1.  When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun and the letter before it carries a ‘helping’ kasrah (not a real kasrah), an example is as follows:
  • “ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ”
  1. When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun as a result of wanting to stop (therefore not a real sukun), and the letter before it is not a ya’ (ي) and carries a sukun, and the letter before that has either a fatha or dammah, examples are as follows:
  • “وَالْعَصْرِ”: the letter before that has a fatha.
  • “خُسْرٍ”: the letter before that has a dammah.
There are four types for when the ra’ (ر) produces a light sound (the tarqeeq of ra’ (ر):
  1. When the ra’ (ر)carries a kasrah h, examples are as follows:
  • وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ
  • لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
  1. When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun and the letter before it carries an original kasrah in the same word and a heavy letter doesn’t follow it, an example is as follows:
  • اذهبا إلى فرعون إنه طغى
  1. When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun (as a result of stopping, either in the middle or end of an ayah) and the letter before it is a ya (ي) (elongated or otherwise) and the carries a ya (ي) sukun, examples are as follows:
  • ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْكَبِير
  • يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌ
  1. When the ra’ (ر) carries a sukun (due to stopping either in the middle or end of an ayah), and the letter before it is a light letter that carries a sukun, and the letter before this carries a kasrah h, an example is as follows:
  • هَلْ فِي ذَلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِذِي حِجْرٍ”, )
