Types of Animals for Qurbani and their minimum age requirement:
According to the Islamic teachings and rules of Qurbani, the below-listed animals can both be male and female. The eligibility is based on factors including health, age, and disabilities.
- Sheep/Goat are the most commonly used animal for Qurbani and is a widely accepted animals for sacrifice. It should be at least 1 year old and in good health without any disabilities to be eligible for sacrifice
- Cow/Bulls are also the types of animals eligible for Qurbani. They should be in good health and should generally be 2 years old to use them for sacrifice.
- Camels are not widely used for Qurbani but are used in some parts of the world, as they are quite expensive. They should be at least 5 years old and in good health to be eligible for Qurbani.

The number of teeth in a Qurbani animal is checked to determine its age and eligibility for sacrifice. It’s a traditional practice and serves as an indicator of an animal’s maturity. A general guideline that is followed is that
Typically, a sheep or goat should at least have two permanent incisor teeth (the front teeth in the lower jaw), and Cow/Bull should at least have 6 permanent incisor teeth (the front upper and lower teeth)

12 Guidelines to follow while conducting Qurbani.
- The first and foremost act while conducting a Qurbani is to keep your intentions pure and conduct the sacrifice only for seeking Allah’s pleasure.
- Select the animals that are eligible for the sacrifice according to Islamic teachings. The eligible animals are typically sheep, goats, cows, buffalo, and camels.
- Take care of the health and well-being of animals. Choose the ones that are healthy, free from infections, disabilities, and major defects, and in good condition for sacrifice.
- Pay attention to the age requirement as per the type of animal. According to Islamic teachings, the recommended age for sheep, and goats is 1 year, For Cows and Bulls, two years, and for Camel is 5 years.
- Refrain from cutting hair and nails for 10 days i-e since 1st Dhull Hajj till the 10th Dhull Hajj ( if you are doing Qurbani on the first day, otherwise till your Qurbani is done)
- Take proper care of the animal brought for the sacrifice, and give it good food and purified water.
- Sacrifice in the Qurbani animal in the recommended time frame. After the Eid ul Adha namaz and before the sunset on Eid’s third day.
- Follow a proper Islamic method of slaughtering the animal. The method involves making a swift act across the throat of the sacrificed animal while reciting Allah’s name
- Use a sharp knife and take care not to sharpen it in front of the sacrificing animal.
- Also, take care not to pull the animal by the rope through which it is tied, force him to race, or give it any kind of Physical pain.
- Divide the Qurbani meat into three portions. One for yourself, one for your family, and one for the poor and ensure its equal distribution.
- Do not take unnecessary pride in Qurbani and hurt those who cannot afford it by showcasing them the Qurbani animal or meat.
Performing Qurbani on Behalf of Others:
Qurbani can be performed on behalf of others and this act is permissible in Islam. It is a great responsibility and should be done with intensive care and pure intentions. However, there are some guidelines that we should follow while doing so.
Permission and Authorization:
To perform Qurbani on behalf of someone who is alive, it is essential to seek their permission and take their consent.
Niyyah:
Qurbani is a sacred and obligatory religious act. Make a clear intention that you are performing it on behalf of a specific individual and also mention their name during the sacrifice.
Selection of Animal:
Select an eligible animal based on Islamic guidelines.
Cost Agreement:
While you are performing Qurbani on behalf of a specific individual, your responsibility is to ensure that all the cost of Qurbani is covered by the person you are performing it for. It is their responsibility to settle all the funds and arrange the money.
Meat Distribution:
The meat should be distributed as per the instructions of the person for whom you performed the sacrifice. You can either send all the meat to that person or let it distribute among family, friends, and the less fortunate, or you can distribute it for them, and send the person its share. It all depends on the wish of the person.
Performing Qurbani on the behalf of Dead:
Performing Qurbani on the behalf of dead is a virtuous act and is considered “Sadaqah Jariyah”. It does have some restrictions and is based on the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the practices of his companions who followed him afterward.
If performed under the proper conditions, performing Udhiya on the behalf of dead benefits both the deceased and the one performing it.
It is important to take the name of the deceased person during Qurbai.
The Timeframe for Qurbani:
The timeframe for performing Qurbani is during the Islamic month Dhull Hijjah which is the last and 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is performed on the days of Eid ul Adha which falls on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hajj.
It is a traditional and recommended method to perform Qurbani on the first day after Eid’s namaz.
